IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Bielousova Rimma

Communication is considered to be one of the most important processes of social life. The author deals with the syllabus design for technical English course as well as some aspects of communication skills development of the students of the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies of Technical University of Kornice with a seat in Prernov, Slovakia.
Some aspects of the material selection as well as some methodological procedures applied to English teaching with the aim to reinforce productive communication skills of the students are also described. Special attention is given to the problem of preparation oral presentation. Oral presentation as one of the communication forms has a unique place among productive communication skills for it allows the communicator to utilize both language and professional knowledge within a new context. Spoken language as the most practical system of communication originated from practical activity and fulfils its role within general consensus representing certain spoken language. Thus, communication is a phenomenon, on the one hand, influencing society as a whole and, on the other hand, influencing man as individual. Effective communication requires knowledge and respecting of psychological as well as social and communication principles. At the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies students studying towards a Bachelor degree within the study branch “Manufacturing Technologies” can choose from the following study programs: “Manufacturing Technologies”, “Computer-aided Manufacturing Technologies”, „Manufacturing Management” and “Manufacturing Technologies of Consumer Industry”. Two semesters foreign language course is compulsory. Students can take English, German or Russian lessons. The aim of teaching foreign languages at the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies is to develop productive communication skills via topics that are closely connected with the study programs of our faculty. The objective is realized through selecting topics and such methodological procedures that enable to form our graduates’ profile. When selecting methods, we follow from the assumption that science and technology are the areas of human activity also characterised by problem solving.
Thus, we try to simulate situations that require certain solution resulting in connection of technical knowledge and creative thinking: dynamical and static description of objects, processes, etc. We suppose that our graduates will become not only a specialist capable of using his foreign language knowledge to study literature, but especially must be able to communicate with partners within professional international environment as well as give presentations on manufacturing technologies. When forming presentation skills of verbal and non-verbal communication the interdisciplinary approach is significant. Our students are mainly graduates of the special secondary technical schools syllabus of which is not focused on humanities. Despite if the fact that our faculty is also technically oriented, great attention is paid to teaching humanities such as Sociology, Philosophy, Rhetoric, Ethics, Mental Activity Techniques. Oral presentation has a unique place among productive communication skills. We consider it to be an opportunity to synthetically use language and professional knowledge within a new context. The importance of drilling presentation skills is important for we suppose that our students will give presentations within their professional future. On the one hand this communication skill requires good knowledge of general English, especially grammar, vocabulary as well as good pronunciation, on the other hand, knowledge of non-verbal communication is significant. In the process of foreign languages teaching it is necessary to apply the interdisciplinary approach. Language communication within technical context must contain the activities based on which it would be possible to interrelate creation, transfer and utilization of information. This approach requires interdisciplinary relationships between foreign language teachers and teachers of technical disciplines when designing the syllabus for technical English course.
